dual layer dvd rw,not being recognized by XP

Gateway just gave me a replacement dual layer dvd rw,after a disc shattered
in it. the factory replacemernt isn't being recognized by the computer..Unit
tries to start,but gives up,before getting the program to the screen,any
suggestions???

If installed properly and fails to recognize more than one brand
of dual-layer DVD-R media, then consider the replacement unit possibly
defective. Test with another replacement.
