Hi,

The computer has dual operating systems, Home and XP. Question: Is
there a way to access programs insralled under home after booting in
Pro or vice versa? Or do all programs have to be installed twice?

Thanks for any help.

You can allways find the programs you have installed on the other OS by
looking in under My Computer on one of the harddisks that you have. Like :

C:\Program Files\

This is generally where windows will put all the programs installed.
Or for ones on another OS they might be placed on D:\Program Files\

But programs which you have installed on the XP Home might not be able to
run on the XP PRO version because they are not set in the registery database
so that windows known what is there, and the same for programs installed on
the XP PRO might not work from XP Home for the same reasons.

Hope this helps.

As explained programs need to be installed under each OS in order to work in
each OS ..the good news is you can install them into their original folders.
In other words if you have program X installed under XP Home into directory
C:/X you can under the other OS install into the same directory.
By the way saying you have Home and XP installed is misleading....there are
only 3 versions of XP...MCE..Home and PRO...

Hi peter;

Other than for saving a bit of hard disk space I wouldn't recommend
installing programs that way on dual installations. It is better to
keep the programs in the Program Files folder designated for each
operating system. That way if you must format and reinstall one of the
operating system the programs won't cease to work in the other
installation and they won't need to be reinstalled again for the second
Operating System. Also, certain updates, fixes or bugs, as minor as
they may be, might apply to one operating system but not the other.
Generally it is best to keep these things completely separate from each
other, that way if an application in one operating system decides to
have a "party", its counterpart in the other operating system doesn't
end up with a hangover also!

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. Seems as though I have to travel the hard
road.

BTW I did make a mistake by saying "home and XP" instead of "home and
pro", thanks for understanding.

Cordially,
