I'd like to format the 40Gb HDD with 25/15Gb (or
20/20Gb)partitions.
Then install mylegal WIN 98SE/FAT32 to the smaller
partition, then install all my other programs and
files/data.
Then Install a legal copy of XP Home, in the larger
partition and build the system up with XP compatible
programs, EG: MS Office Pro XP, as I can afford them.
I think I can format the smaller with FAT 32, Install
98SE and then let XP "do it's thing" and format the larger
partition, and install itself.
Is this possible, and will the two systems work without
interference?
My wife bought XP home after a disasterous episode with
WIN 2000Pro. We took her computer back to the vendor, had
the drive reformatted, and then I installed XP for her.
It seems to be working OK
I would appreciate any help, comments etc on this
operation, especially the partitioning and using FDISK.
Thanks, John Robertson please Email, as I have
problems finding the right place here in the MS location

Yes, you can do this. But you can't let XP "do it's thing" (should be
"its")
because that will result in an upgrade.

Start XP setup from your Win98 system (an upgrade CD will do).
When it offers to upgrade, select "Clean(Advanced)".
Push the advanced button.
Check "Let me tell you what partition to install to."
Later in the install you will get the screen to format and select
partitions.

Suggest you put off installing all your programs and data on the Win98
partition
until you are sure you have gotten all this right.

Have fun.
