dual boot: installing xp on 2 partitions of same drive

Is it possible to instal xp home on a second partition so there are two versions?
I ask b/c my sony vaio laptop will not boot or repair. xp on c: is unreparable (currupt or missing file ntoskrnl.exe and some .dll files that setup can't fix/repair), so i want to install it on the senond partition d: to get it to boot, then remove all my data, then do a complete system recovery (which would wipe the drives with a new image)

FYI, i have another copy/license of xphome if the install requires it...

You can do it but you'll need a third party partition/boot manager to be
able to boot to it.

Do not use any 3rd. party software such as Boot Magic. These types of
software are not compatible with XP.
Boot.ini usually sorts itself out in this manner -

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional (#1)" /fastdetect

Woops - word-wrapped.

The last two lines both begin with multi(0)disk(0) and end at /fastdetect,
with a space between XP and Professional

Why is this? I guess you are saying that i will not get a choice
screen during the boot up?

What about putting win2k instead on the second partition (d:)?

Also, if this means the same problem, what is a 3rd party boot manager?
(Can you recommend any shareware etc. to accomplish this?)

Hi John_f, please,
the above apply also to XP Home (I have OEM version) ?
Many Thanks & Greetings from Italy

Yes, providing you modify the 'Professional' bit with Notepad to agree with
the current wording in your boot.ini

If you have trouble finding boot.ini with the XP search engine, download
AgentRansack instead.

I'd think that'd at least cause havoc in the Program Files folder.
Especially for programs that copied dll's etc. to other than within the home
folder and it's sub-folders.

On two separate partitions, there's two separate Program Files trees
created, one for each OS.

Don't ask why - but what if the 2nd installation is in a folder labelled
"Windows2" and the original is in "Windows". The PC is booting using the
Windows2 install and I want it to use the Windows install. Would the same
boot.ini handle this? Do I edit the boot.ini for both installs are just the
Windows2? What if I want it to always boot using Windows rather than
Windows2?
