DSL connection stops responding

I have DSL, and at times it will just stop responding. I
am running XP home and IE 6 sp1. If I open a browser
window, it times out, and I get a "server unavailable"
error. This usually happens if the computer is left idle
for a period of time (i.e. and hour or two), but it has
been known to happen even while I am actively surfing. I
don't believe it is the DSL connection itself, because I
run that through a router that automatically signs me on
(the dsl runs through pppoe). And if I simply restart my
computer, which does not affect the router or dsl modem,
my internet connection is restored. I had a similar
problem with windows 98, but a registry entry corrected
that. Now however, I am having similar problems with XP,
and the aforementioned registry entry is already there.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this.
Thanks in advance.

[I also responded to someone else below, but]

I receive this on a regular basis when the PC goes into the screen saver for
too long.

Running '98SE, and also using broadband connection. It appears that the
browser is not going back to the DNS to do address resolution. When on this
page you cannot refresh to get to the address in the address bar, nor go to
"Home." In my case, the browser must be restarted.

No, none of the addresses outside of the DNS addresses are in the HOSTS
file.
Yes, those addresses match what is reported using ipconfig or WINIPCFG.
No, renaming or deleting the HOSTS file does any good.

This is a browser error with IE6.

I had the same problem. My internet connection would work at first, but after a while I would be unable to connect. What I had to do was add my router's ip address to the trusted zone in my firewall (Zone Alarm). To do this in Zone Alarm, you go to the firewall tab and select the zones tab. Then add your router/modem ip address to the trusted zone. If you have a different firewall, I don't know how this is done, but it should be a similar process. Good luck.

P.S. I realize this thread is really old, but maybe my suggestion will help others. It would have helped me since I read this post before I finally figured out the solution.
