Dropping internet connection

I'm having a strange problem w/ XP Pro that I didn't have
with 2k pro. If I step away from my computer for a couple
of hours, with or without my browser open, my internet
connection(cable) will not respond. The internet
connection icon in the system tray shows the connection
is established but the browser can't find the connection.
I've tried IE, Opera and Firefox and none of them can
connect. To be able to re-establish my connection I have
to shut down and restart the computer.
Does anyone have an idea what's wrong?

1. Is your computer 100% virus and spyware-free? Malware can definitely
impact connectivity.

2. Did you update the NIC (network card) drivers when you installed XP?
If not, do so. Get the drivers from the NIC mftr.'s website, not from
Windows Update.

My router causes that kind of a problem...shuts down the internet
connection for no reason several times a week, and is easily fixed
by pushing the rounter reset button (I have cable broadband).
