dropped external hard drive help needed

Hello, I recently dropped my external 2.5" Travelstar 6.4 gb hard
drive. It still spins and the external enclosure lights up when it is
plugged in . The first time I ran it, it showed all the file folders,
but they where "empty" when clicked on. Several attempts later to run
it , it does not appear to be reconized by either one of my computers .
It is a USB connection. I just downloaded over 5 gigs of music, movies,
and pictures onto this, it worked fine as a flash drive, then it fell
to the floor. This has important info, and priceless material on it.
Alas, I am not a wealthy man, but a tinkerer at heart. Any suggestions
out there ? Thanks for reading this.............................Peace

Smart move having stuff like that on just one drive.

If it really is priceless material, try www.retrodata.co.uk

If you cant even afford that, it may be worth trying some of the
recovery software out there. I like Easy Recovery Pro, but it isnt free.

Don't want to make you pessimistic,
but fallen hdds are challenging things even for the most advanced data
recovery guys and percentage of recovery is pretty low

Your only real chance is professional data recovery. If you
consider that, stop messing areound with the drive immediately.
You can only make the problem worse.

BTW, "priceless" material should be strored in more than one
independent location.

It that were so (drive heads ploughing up the platter surfaces) then
it already is too late, babblehead. Do you ever use your brains.

Pity of all the hours of trying already can't be undone.

You think? Oops, no you don't.

Only 2 typos? Must be one of your better days.

Depends on what type of HD, it's way of mounting and how it falls.
Laptop HDs are more rugged and much lighter than desktop HDs.
On top of that, IBM Laptop HD have heads parked off the platters.
even for the most advanced data recovery guys
and percentage of recovery is pretty low.

In case of mechanical damage.
