drop down lists (validation)

In the data validation dialog box, select the Error Alert tab
Remove the check mark from 'Show error alert after invalid data is entered'
 
I have configured a spread sheet to have drop down lists. But I want the
ability to put in other data other than the choices from the drop down lists
to give the user a little more flexibility in filling out the form. Is this
possible and if so, how do you do it?
