Drop down list in Excel

I need a drop down to expedite the entry of info. However, I also need the
cell(s) formatted so as to take info not contained in the drop down. How can
I accomplish this?
 
Use Data Validation to set your list. On the error alert tab either uncheck
the Show error alert after invalid data is entered box or change the style to
warning or info.
