Drop down fields

I have created a form for report cards several years ago. I have decided to
update my fields to dropdown fields for the grades. I must be creating the
dropdown field wrong. I went back to the form, clicked in the cell that
contained the text field and selected the dropdown field icon. I added all
of the grades to the dropdown items list. I want the field to remain blank
until a grade is selected from the dropdown list. However, what I get is a
form full of the first grade listed in the dropdown list. What am I doing
wrong?

That is how the Drop Down Form Field works. If you don't want one of the
grades to appear as the default you'll have to add another item at the top
of the list (such as the word "Select"). You can use a pumctuation mark or
even a space, but what is at the top of the item list will appear as the
default choice.

There may be a way to avoid that, but the field itself has no provision for
having _nothing_ selected.

Add a dropdown entry containing just a space or two and move it to the
top of the list.
