In a drop down box, how do you leave a blank as an option so that you can
enter data in it?

If a DV List dropdown, you don't need a blank.

In DV>Error Alert uncheck "Show error alert after invalid data has been
entered"

You can type in anything you want.

Note: this item won't be added to the DV source list.
