My current computer (bought Nov-03) and the one before it have had
'issues' with the open/close button on the CD player. I contacted the
mfg-er on the last one and they determined that nothing was wrong with
the player, but there were some other issues regarding the updating of
my BIOS before I upgraded from ME to XP Home.

I'm finding my new computer, which was shipped with XP Pro, is having
the same issues, that the close button doesn't work sometimes.

My question is...can all the software that runs on these things create
problems with the CD player on the computer? I suspect various
programs compete for 'ownership' or 'priority' of the hardware, and
could some of the settings get screwed up in the process? I remember
that RealPlayer (I do not use it but it has 'asked permission' to rule
my media...I use MediaPlayer instead) had some issues years ago about
privacy, etc. I also use a program for writing CDs that came with my
computer, a program called Sonic.

Before I contact Dell AGAIN, I'd like to try reinstalling the drivers
for the CD player. How do I do that? Will the drivers be in XP? It
is a Samsung SC-148C. Can I delete the old driver and just reinstall
them?

sounds to me like a problem with the drive itself not software, but i maybe
wrong.

There are some programs that like to manage the opening of the tray via
program menus. Suspect any program used for burning CDs that is currently
running or was just used. Usually you don't have to open the program trying
to control this. Instead you should be able to right click on an icon for
the drive and select Eject.
