drivers for monitor

Tom

Where are the drivers for the monitor stored in Vista Home Premium?

I want to add a driver from my monitor's manufacturer and make it the
default. How do I do this? Is it safe to delete any/all of the others?

TIA

Hi,

Open Device Manager, expand the monitor branch and right click the listed
monitor, choose properties. On the driver tab, click 'update drive'. Choose
browse and navigate to wherever you stored the manufacturer's monitor
driver. Select it and finish. Vista will store it appropriately for you. Do
not manually delete other drivers from the store.

Thanks for that but I've hit a snag. Device Manager merely tells me I have
a generic PnP monitor and when I try to install the Dell driver, says that
the best driver - the existing Microsoft driver, is already installed.

I have an Acer Aspire L3600 which came with an 19 inch Acer monitor and has
onboard graphics but I usually want to use my Dell 24 inch with its greater
resolution. I "KVM switch" between the Aspire with Vista Home Premium and
my "main" PC running XP Pro SP2 with an Nvidia 6600GT card and which happily
supports the Dell's 1920 x 1220 resolution. The Aspire needs the Dell
driver to display the greater resolution but won't retain the settings,
especially if the KVM switch is linked to the XP Pro PC on start up. The
Dell monitor is not specifically identified by name in Device Manager on the
Aspire even when it's displaying at 1990 x 1200.

Is there a fix????

Hi,

With the KVM switch, the Acer will never actually detect the monitor so it
will not retain settings for it. I don't know that there would be any
workaround to this, you'd have to manually set it each time.

Hi,

I've got a similar problem. Vista, KVM, with a Viewsonic 19" Widescreen.

Every time I reboot, the monitor gets reset to default, with a non-native
resolution that looks rubbish. I have to go into Device Manager, search for
new hardware. For some reason, Vista finds 2 identical Viewsonics. I can then
go into change the resolution to the correct setting (1440 x 900), which is
not available for the default monitor.

I've tried to 'Install legacy hardware', but monitors aren't in the list.

This is really poor. I have no problem with my other PC (XP Pro) on the same
switch & monitor.
