I get a Blue Screen of death - nothing works without Resetting system.
XXX Stop: 0x000000D1
Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL
Address BDAB67AC base at BDAB1000, Date Stamp 3ecd5361 - mrxsmb.sys
Beginning dump of physical memory

The last time I got this repeatedly I had to reinstall the OS (Win 2000 Pro
with latest updates). Is there another option? What is it?

You might try the latest driver from the manufacturer for the network
adapter or possibly uninstall it and try another NIC

Why would this be a network card issue? I suspected a virus or spyware.
Also.....would it make a difference if I let the "dump of physical memory"
finish? Does it ever finish? I once let it run for qjuite a while and it
never finished.

1.) Because 'mrxsmb.sys' was involved.
2.) Virus and or spyware would seldom cause a blue screen stop. Almost
always a hardware and or driver issue.
3.) Yes it will eventually finish. No it won't make any difference.

I should have mentioned that my hosts file in system32/drivers/etc is often
corrupted. By corrupted I mean the addition of addresses that the hosts file
prevents the computer to acquire virus updates from. I correct it but a
little while later its back. I even deleted the hosts file as an experiment
but then it got replaced with the same corruption. Hence the suspicion its a
virus. Or perhaps I have 2 seperate problems.
