Driver Updates

Scan for updates indicated that the following driver
update was available:

NVIDIA display software update released on September 27
2002.

This was downloaded but fails to install; starts to but
progress bar swiftly finishes and fail notification
given. Unfortunately only guidance is to download and
install again (fails every time) with no additional
reason for why it failed. Can anyone advise of possible
problem and how to fix ???

This issue may occur if you use the AOL Web browser interface to access and
download Windows Updates. The AOL Web browser does not communicate properly
with the Windows Installer software, and this may cause Windows Installer to
stop responding.

Any reason you wouldn't want to use any of nVidia's excellent drivers that
are much newer? (www.nvidia.com)

Aside from the fact that there are newer and better drivers written by the
manufacturer, Windows Update's ability to sense and provide the correct
hardware drivers has always been imperfect at best.

I second John Galt's comment, and add that changing drivers just because
a new one is available is not always the most prudent thing to do. If
you feel that you must always have the latest driver, (1) get it from
the device manufacturer -- NOT Windows Update, (2) make sure you're
getting the corect driver for your hardware and O/S, (3) make a System
Restore point before you change drivers, and (4) remember that XP has a
"rollback driver" capability.
