Driver error: Cannot create a file when that file already exists

My HP LaserJet 1300 driver gets an error at the very end of the installation
"Cannot create a file when that file already exists".

I had to reinstall the driver because, starting Monday, every print job
including test pages failed to print and remained in the print queue. This
printer has been running for months on a Windows XP desktop until this past
Monday. There have been no recent software or hardware changes.

When the print job failed, the following events were in the system log:
Event ID 45: ... Win32 error code returned by the print processor was 259
(0x103) and Event ID 6161: Document failed to print due to GDI/driver error
in rendering.

I followed the Windows XP printer troubleshooting wizard and reached the
point to uninstall the printer driver and reinstall. I removed the printer,
deleted the printer in device manager, and uninstalled the HP software.

I have tried reinstalling from the driver CD shipped with the printer,
installed from the latest driver downloaded from HP.com, and used the Add
Printer Wizard, all approaches result in the same install error: "Cannot
create a file when that file already exists" and then the installation
program rolls back the install to the beginning.

I suspect there may be an orphaned registry entry or DLL left behind from
the uninstall process, but I isolate which one stops the install.

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions!
