Drive order...

Just installed XP Home ed. SP2 in a newly assembled system box and Windows
ended up on drive H:\
Part of the reason was I fitted a camera card reader, connected to a USB pin
header on the motherboard that seems to have been allocated drives c d e f
but, the cd r/w drive has ended up as drive g:\
....and as I said Windows is on H:\ [ 40gb hd ...all as drive H:\ ]

I know I can unplug the card reader, reinstall and connect it afterwards
but, how did the cd r/w drive end up as G:\ ?

....or could Windows be left on drive H:\ ...or is it preferable to have
Windows on C:\ , that's the way I've always worked.

Hello,
I think the general recommendation is to leave all
the USB devices unconnected during the install.
You're probably stuck with it now, unless you reinstall...

The drive letter that Windows is on shouldn't matter, it should stil
work just fine. As long as you remember that H is your boot drive an
check the default location on installations, you should have n
problems

The way Windows XP setup assigns drive letters is, if, when it starts
up, it finds storage devices that it can assign letters to (in your
situation, the card reader), then it will assign a letter to the
optical drive too. So when you then created the partition on the hard
drive, it became H.
Because the partition on the hard drive now exists, if you run Windows
XP setup again without disconnecting the card reader, setup will
assign C to the hard disk partition.
 
oh well, unplugged card reader | reinstalled, all ok and all drives in
"default" order as I prefer - serve me right !
