Drive mappings versus My Network Places

Hello,

we have noticed an intermittent problem with some of our
w2k VPN clients (all of which are on broadband)when they
are browsing through My Network Places.

It seems that if they map a drive to a resource and browse
through the folder structure, there is no problem.
However, if they access this resource through My Network
Places, it can be much slower to do this. Also, when
looking at the VPN connection properties, there are many
more bytes sent and received when browsing folder
structures through My Network Places than when doing so
through a mapped drive.

What is the difference in protocols between accessing
resources through a mapped drive versus My Network Places
and why would this result in more bytes being sent and
received?

Please advise.

Thanks,

Simon

I could only guess at what the actual packet flow is communicating, but it must be a resolution issue, so DNS vs NetBIOS would be my guess.

We only use hardware VPN at several of our clients, and see the same problem, which we solve by implementind WINS!

My answer for slowness logging on and slowness connecting to shares is ALWAYS, "Try WINS!"
