drive letter keeps changing

Does anyone know why the drive letter assigned to my usb memory stick changes
randomly from G to H and I?

I plug it into a hub usually in the same slot. But a few weeks ago I put it
into the slot next to it (leaving the original slot blank). The drive letter
changed to H. I plugged it back into the original slot (where it still
resides) and now it just rotates between those letters. I would prefer it
remain consistent and, if possible, to stay as letter G.

Btw - I'm running XP Home.

Thanks

The next time it shows up as H, try the following:
Go to Start -> Run and enter diskmgmt.msc in the Open box.
Click OK.
In Disk Management, look in the lower pane for your USB drive.
Right click on the drive and select "Change Drive Letters and
Paths..." from the menu.
In the box that pops up, hit the Change button.
Change the letter next to "Assign the following drive letter"
to G.
Click OK twice.
Close Disk Management.
Reboot you computer to see if the assigned letter sticks.

Good luck

By default XP assigns the letter used last time for the drive
or the first availlable one.
XP can save only one assignment per letter. If you attach your
stick while another one is attached which got the first letter,
then your stick gets the next availlable letter and XP saves this
assignment. As long as no one deletes this assignment it is
persistent.
But there is an X-factor: If the stick has an USB serial number
then XP recognizes the stick independed of the used USB port.
Many sticks have no serial and then XP must think it's a new
one whenever you use a different port.

You can change the used letter by means of the Windows disk management.

How to change drive letter assignments in Windows XP:

If you choose an 'high' letter and use always the same USB port
then the stick's letter should stay persistent.
