Drastic increase in size

10 to 1 is a typical compression ratio for jpeg at a
medium-ish quality setting. Tiffs by default aren't
compressed and the compression options that are available
usually won't compete with jpeg for small size on a
photo. You might want to visit a graphics-oriented
newsgroup or website for more information on graphic file
formats.
