I am looking for a CAD type program that someone with no experiance could
use for designing small progects like workbenches and wall units of
shelving.

Free 2D CAD program, will read AutoCAD up to 2005, DXF
Has basic commands and functions. I suggest also a search for a tutorial
on basic CAD functions, to get over the common beginner errors, eg having
to "snap" to line ends for another line, rather than simply drawing as
with a drawing board, etc.
