dpi vs resolution

In Display Properties, you can increase size of everything displayed
by either increasing dpi or decreasing resolution . Only difference
I see between the 2 is that resolution is set in quanta where dpi is
adjusted continuously.

Is this true? Any other differences ?

I'm no authority, either, but generally, resolution is what your display
will show, while dpi is the pixel density per inch of the image.
