Downloading files from memory card from digital camera?

I've noticed that some digital cameras come with non-Vista compatible
software. Is it possible to still use this camera with Vista, by
getting a memory card for the camera? Or will the files be compressed
and need to be uncompressed by the specific software, and so it's
totally incompatible?
Thanks.

The memory card reader will do the job.
The camera files are not going to have any "special" format.
In general they will be jpg unless your camera has provisions for shooting

My Nikon camera stores photos as JPEGs and movies as *.mov. It has a
removable SD memory card which can be read in the card reader of my PC. I
haven't installed the camera's software, because you're not really using
another hardware device; the SD card is treated like any other external
storage media like a floppy disk, CD or flash/thumb drive.
