just downloaded Tightvnc....went to the check file link option to
compare my download and was confronted with the following which i have
no idea how to translate.

NOTE: I downloaded the version 1.2.9 without installer which
pricelessware site recomended

if this verification process is simple i would apreciate a
pointer....if its a nurd thing....i will take my chances since i have
more security progs than a paranoid scizophrenic.

would also apreciate opinions from users of this prog on weather or not
this prog is secure or not.....is it like gotomypc in that when its
turned off it cant be hacked???...and can i use disposable passwords
like gotomypc???...

anyway....here is the "check file" data i need explained:

VNC is one of the few programs I download the installer with. This is
true of all the flavors on Windows that I've used. I'd recommend using
the installer yourself, so it installs the service for you, etc..

As far as security, I don't think any VNC builds support disposable
passwords which would be a great feature. However, VNC does use challenge
code response password exchange so at least the password to access VNC is
secure (if a strong p/w is chosen).

The data after you start using VNC is plain text and unencrypted albeit
compressed video.

It's recommended that one should use VNC with SSH as discussed here (in
part): http://faq.gotomyvnc.com/fom-serve/cache/28.html . Personally, I
use SSH on my Fedora box to VNC inside my LAN - only the one SSH port
need be opened to the internet, and VNC is never directly accessible. I
only access it on trusted remote workstations such as my own laptop.

These are MD5 checksum lines. You use the "md5sum" program and it
checks that what you downloaded matches.

Go ogle on md5sum for more info.

MD5summer is an application for Microsoft Windows 9x, NT, ME, 2000 & XP
which generates and verifies md5 checksums. Its output file is
compatible with the output of the Linux GNU MD5Sum and it will also read
Linux generated files. MD5summer is written in Borland Delphi 5 and is
released under the General Public License, the source can be downloaded
from the downloads page. If you like MD5summer, please send me a
postcard.
