Download problems

Standalone Windows 2000, connect via dialup. For the last two weeks, will not download emails with file attachments (times out), will not download certain web pages (especially those with .asp, .aspx, etc. file extensions). Just hangs. Sometimes the dialup icon shows the number of downloaded bytes frozen, sometimes it keeps growing even after I shut down Outlook and IE. Norton Antivirus updates get LU1856 error message, yet sometimes LiveUpdate says I'm current (Symantec says this is their problem, but seems related to my email and web page problems). Can't load Housecall to do an online virus scan, Norton doesn't find any viruses. My ISP doesn't report any problems on their end. Have run Adaware as well. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you've got some kind of virus.

See if this might help...

Reboot into safemode. Check your services, make sure nothing is set to
start automatically that doesn't need to be. If you see anything that looks
suspicious, disable it from starting completely.

Check your registry:
HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

This is a list of all software that will automatically launch for all users.
Make sure there is nothing that looks suspicious here. There will be
several entries, depending on your installed software. Delete any entries
you feel safe deleting. Modify the file path to something that doesn't
exist for those you are not sure about (that way you can revert your changes
if items are needed.)

Repeat for RunOnce. Unless you have just installed something, there should
not be any entries here.

Repeat for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Repeat for HKEY_USERS\[SID
#]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - of Any other user
accounts you use

Check you Start Menu -> Startup folders for unwanted programs.

Once you are confident nothing is set to start with windows that doesn't
have to, reboot into normal mode, and return to Housecall. If you still
have problems, you might try downloading TrendMicro's System Cleaner, if
your dialup connection stays active long enough.

I suspect Norton is interfering with your downloads; it's called virus protection.

Thanks for the ideas...I tried these but found nothing odd or unwanted in the registry. My dialup connection is good, its only the ISP's email server that times out when I have an incoming item with a file attachment. Also, html web pages and elements load ok, but anything that smacks of .asp or .aspx won't load (so I can't get Housecall or System Cleaner from Trendmicro). A friend wonders if it's a Java problem, but I'm not familiar with that. I did not find any pertinent viruses or Windows updates coming into play when this problem started (around 3/25). What do file attachment emails and .asp web pages have in common? More ideas? Thanks again
