Is there a way, using IMAP, to limit Windows Mail to only deal with the most
recent X messages?

I have a GMail account with in the region of 24,000 messages but on a day to
day basis, I'm only really interested in the most recent few hundred.

Archiving isn't a solution as there are filters involved and an archived
message with a filter applied is still in that filter, certain filters are up
to thousands of messages as well.

A most recent 200 messages option would be fantastic.
 
Perhaps it wasn't worded perfectly but in my defense Windows Mail hiding
messages from me is still Windows Mail dealing with messages. I'm not adding
a parameter, I'm clarifying one.

Try setting your 'username' in the account settings>server tab>incoming mail
server>to recent:username
