Download caused chaos

I downloaded the Cumlative Patch fofr I E 6 Service pack
when it was released in June. It caused chaos. When I
mangaged to get the computer in order again I downloaded
it again and the same thing happened. Given this new
virus warning, what do I need to to to protect my system
(Windows 98 SE)without running into the same problem?

The virus should not attack the W98 system. According to all the sites it
only attacks NT, 2000, and XP systems.

I have had similar symptoms when trying to load software
with an early version of McAfee Antivirus running. Caused
me more problems than a virus would have! You might try
turning off any virus checking software before loading the
patch.
