Downgrading From WindowsXP to WindowsME

B

Bill Jackson

I am currently running WindowsXP on a 233 MHz system. While it ran very slowly in the past, it was at least tolerable. However, lately the system has become so slow that it is "painful". It is so slow that sometime I think it has locked up.

I am considering uninstalling WindowsXP and reinstalling WindowsME in order to improve the performance of this computer. Is this a viable solution? If so, are there any specific things I should do to insure that all my programs on that computer remain in tact? Do I simply uninstall WindowsXP using Add/Remove program, or is there some other procedure that should be followed? What is the proper way to go about what I want to do?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am surprised you got XP to install on that computer at all ...it is way below minimum spec for XP ...

you will have to perform a clean install of ME , there is no way to "down-grade or uninstall XP"

which means you WILL lose you data....and programs will have to be re-installed using the ME compatible version

sorry

233 MHz is below the recommended but not the below the minumum specs...233
MHz:

So it is no suprise Windows XP installed.

Personally, I wouldn't install Windows ME on ANY computer!

There is no way to downgrade from XP to ME short of doing a clean reinstall
of ME. There is no way you will be able to keep your filestructure intact.
This means you will lose all your programs and data, unless you back them up
before reinstalling ME.

This will entail repartitioning and formatting your HD to prepare it for
installation of ME and ME-compatible programs, devices, and device drivers.

I never would have tried installing XP on a 233mhz computer in the first
place. It would be an exercise in futility, as you have discovered.

If he upgraded to XP to begin with, he may well be able to uninstall XP,
and revert to his previous OS.

To the OP:

Even if that is the case, back up all your files, data, settings, and
anything on your computer that you are unwilling to lose. If you can't
or won't do that, then you should probably not take the risk.

Sounds like your dinosaur is fossilizing, so start saving up for a new
computer.

As Kurt has mentioned in this thread, if he installed XP over ME, he may
well be able to uninstall XP and revert to ME through add/remove programs in
Control Panel as long as he opted to save his previous setup during the
upgrade, has not removed the old setup saved file and he has not converted
the file system to NTFS.

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

Only if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup
the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, can
you then boot into Safe Mode and click Start > Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions must be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

This isn't entirely true. If you did an upgrade from ME to XP, and
elected to keep ME backup stuff so you can go back to it, then in
effect XP will allow you to "downgrade" back to ME.

Thanks to all who have responded. I am convinced that if I keep this system
I will have to do a format and clean install of WindowsME, then a reinstall
of all the programs I currently have on the system, since everything will be
lost.

Dont forget to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to save your data
and settings.
Very handy tool. I use it to back up my Outlook Express Newsgroups and
Accounts settings. It might be able to backup a whole folder, so you don't
necessarily have to lose all your programs. Just backup the folders using
the F&STW, then burn them to a CD or back them up directly to a secondary
partition used for backup purposes.
