Double spacing text increases my bottom margin

When I double space my text in a document (research papers) there is clearly
room to have another line on the bottom of the page before reaching the
margin. Instead that line is transfered to the next page making my bottom
margin appeared to be much larger than it should. How do I fix this problem?
