double spacing problem

When I cut and paste from notepad into Word, everything double spaces, then
everything else I type also double spaces when I hit enter, unless I hit
shift-enter. Then identing and bulleting because unpredictable and hard to
control What causes this and how do I get it to paste normally or once
pasted, how do I get Word to behave as it normally would. I now have a
document with mixed areas where the area I typed it fine, the areas I pasted
I'm having difficulty formatting. Thanks!

This is not double spacing. This is caused by Space Before/After. Remove
this in Format | Paragraph.

I believe the problem is that when you paste from text files there is often
a paragraph mark -- created by pressing ENTER -- after each line of text
(and two paragraph marks after each paragraph). In Word, there is no need
for this, since text automatically moves to a new line when the previous one
is "full" (as determined by font, font size, and of course by the margins
specified in Page Setup). In order to see the paragraph marks, you can click
the ¶ button on the Standard toolbar.

For more information, see:

line but not at the end of each paragraph

What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my
document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean?

.
Simply hightlight all your text and click on the format
button on the menu bar then click paragraph. That should
open a window that has a section called "spacing" which
in has an area called "line spacing." On the drop down
menu select single and then click ok, problem should be
fixed.
