Double inboxes; can't do a repair

So, out of nowhere another instance of the inbox appears in the "Outlook
Shortcuts". I did something, don't know what. There are NOT two .dbx files on
the C:, so I can't delete it from there. How do I get rid of it?

Another problem I am having is trying to do a "Detect and Repair". It tells
me to put in the Office 2000 Premier CD which I do and the dat file it is
looking for IS there but I get a error message saying it is corrupt or some
such. Question here is: If I completely reinstall Office 2000 (and I DO want
to use this ver and not any of the other, newer once I have) will all the
data from my Outlook email be saved?
 
Thankk you! That helped with the backup. After I do those things, should I
completely uninstall Outlook? I have the feeling if I reinstall without
getting totally rid of it (reg, etc) I will still have two inboxes!
 
Just as an aside: Outlook doesn't use .dbx files; Outlook Express does. They
are two completely separate programs.

Reinstalling Outlook rarely helps with such problems. Check if your
profile is not corrupted; delete and recreate it.

P.S. Outlook does not use .dbx files (Outlook Express does); Outlook
uses .PST files.
 
oh my, NOW I do have a problem. The ONLY inbox file on my system IS a .dbx.
However, I DO have an Outlook.pst file. What a mess!!! I have in my IE
options to use Outlook (NOT Express) but when I go to send an email from a
site, Express loads up. I have never installed Outlook Express.

I installed Outlook from MS Office 2000. My OS, btw, is Windows 2000 Pro.
Looks like I am going to make a trip through the Registry. I do hope it is
nothing like taking a trip through the registry in XP Pro, where you can't
delete anything the program doesn't want you to.

Your Outlook.pst file contaions all your Outlook data -- messages,
appointments, tasks, contacts, etc. Outlook doesn't use separate files for
each folder like OE does.

If you have Outlook set as your default mail handler but OE still comes up
when you try to send a message, see if anything in this article helps:
