Double desktop items (two of each!)

I have arrived at a state where all my non-system desktop
icons are displayed twice. For instance, every shortcut,
file and folder is displayed twice, although the system
folders My Computer and My Documents are displayed only
once.

This happened due to the following sequence of events:

1. I moved my Desktop folder to the All Users/Shared
Documents folder. This caused the problem described in
Knowledge Base Article 823291, "File List in the Windows
Explorer Folder Is Not Refreshed After You Create, Move,
or Delete Files".

2. Rather than request the beta fix for the refersh
problem (and thinking better of the move in the first
place), I moved the Desktop folder back to my User
folder. After doing that, I ended up with the double
icons. And guess what, half of the icons refresh
automatically, and half of them don't!

3. I have tried a system restore back to before all this
started, to no avail. I have also verified that the
duplicate desktop icons point to the same item on disk
(when I delete a file in my User/Desktop folder, both
desktop icons go away; and when I add a file, two icons
appear).
