Double Click to Open Files & Folders

When I double click on a folder to view the contents it opens the search
companion in a new window. The only file that opens correctly is the My
Computer icon on my desktop. I have tried to change the folder settings to
open in the same window and I've gone back and forth from single to
double-click. Nothing seems to work. I've noticed that when I right click,
(which is what I have to do in order to open the file now to avoid the
search) search is the first option and it is bolded for the folders that
aren't working properly and My Computer has Open as the first and bolded
option. I think this may have something to do with it but I cannot figure out
what I could have done to cause the problem, system restore didn't help
because it says no changes have been made to my computer. I don't know what
else to do now.
