dot matrix printers

olson521

Both of my computers are operating with WindowsXP, I am
unable to get them to print using my Okidata 320 printer.
I use this printer to print my checks, I do all of my
accounting at home and use the Okidata for this work.
I was told by a tech who I called in to check my computer
and also talked to Quickboos, both said that Windows XP
does not support dot matrix printers is this so. How may
I correct this problem. I want to update my computers in
the office but unless there is a solution to this problem
have to leave them as is.

That printer should just work, unless you have a preinstalled
branded OEM version of Windows, then you may be SOL.

OK! see my post from 12/17/03 "Dot Matrix - XP Spooler Problems

I've been trying since last summer to get my Panasonic KX-P1524 to
work in Windows XP. I ran it as a Epson LQ-1500 in Windows 98 but
the LQ-1500 emulation in XP doesn't work. I spent 124 min. on the
phone with Microsoft tech support.........net result LQ=1500 is not
supported (even though a driver was supplied in XP). They told me
to set up a dual boot system with XP & Win98. They also told me to
disregard error messages in the event viewer.

Can you offer any help????

What happens if you set the PC to printer directly to the printer instead of
using the spooler (printer properties)?

Is the LPT port in the BIOS set to EPP? BiDirectional?

XP does not have problems with dot matrix printers per se... think of EVERY
airline and EVERY car rental facility... ALL of them use dot matrix printers
(mainly Okidata I believe)....

Thank you for your interest in my problem.
I tried stopping the spooler service and that made matters worse.
It appears that all printing has to go through XP's spooler.

The Bios is set to SPP. I also tried the automatic setting as well.

The problem of old printers has been well documented in all the
newsgroups. One MS-MVP wrote a answer to someone last fall that any
printer over two years old is obsolete and should be replaced.

MS-Tech support gave only two options, a new printer or a dual boot
sys. But Win98 only runs on a Fat32 drive. I use the NTFS. To be
quite frank, I didn't spend all this money for WinXP and WinXP
Office to be told to go back to Win98.

I don't think that Epson is going to write a new driver for their
LQ-1500. After all how will that help new printer sales? Microsoft
says the drivers are supplied by the vendors. I even tried the
driver for the generic that Epson put on their website last spring
and received the same error message........But anyway let's not
beat a dead horse!

The error code: 61
Source: Print
Symbolic Name: MSG_PRINT_ON_PROC_FAILED
Message: The document %1 owned by %2 failed to print on printer %3,
Win32 error code returned by the print processor: %4, %5

This was obtained via the Event Viewer.

Please offer your comments on this,
Regards BP

Print Processor is Winprint (Raw Data)
Also make sure the spool directory is set to write for everyone
default location is windows\system32\spool\printers

This file folder is empty.
I have a Epson 740, that works without problems. Also, recently
added a fax printer to the Printer & Faxes folder and sent a fax
last week without a problem.
Today I am trying Panasonic Tech support again. Will post results.
