DOS Program running on Win XP

I need to deploy a new computer at my company. This system came with Windows XP Professional. Previously we had been using Win98SE. The problem is that I have some legacy DOS based programs which the user will need to run while they are being converted to a Windows based program. I am running into two major issues
1. I am having difficulty getting enough conventional memory for the program to run. One program has only 90k left to run in, whereas on a Win98 machine it has 160k.
2. These programs use a couple of the DOS environment variables. How can I use these under Win XP
Thanks
Jack

Hi Jack,

You may or may not be able to depending on the requirements of the program.
Anything requiring direct hardware access is not going to work - period. The
only work-around here would be to use an emulator (VirtualPC or VMware) and
load Win98 in it and run the software from inside it. To adjust
environmental variables, go to the control panel/system/advanced tab, there
is a button at the bottom for environmental variables where you can
add/remove them for both the user and the system as a whole.

If you right click on the shortcut to launch the DOS program there will be a
Compatibility tab which will let you set some of these settings.

You might want to keep 'ol Betsy around for a bit.
