i know about all the issues with running DOS based games on Win XP. But
surely there is some sort of way around it? Someone please explain to
me why DOS based games/programmes will not run on XP.

Cheers. Steve

Hi happy_hippy,

Legacy DOS support was not shipped with Windows XP
simply because realtime DOS support doesn't allow the
host OS, in this case Windows XP to maintain it's stability
which is built on a foundation of stringent hardware control.

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/faq.php and
http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For sound
issues use: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound Good Luck! :)

Part of the error message was somthing about 'autoexec.nt'. Somthing
like C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/AUTOEXEC.NT is being weird or somthing lol. So
anyway i tried to find this file in the system32 folder and it wasnt
there. It was hiding in a folder named 'repair'. So i moved it to
SYSTEM32 and now i can run DOS games simple as that. I havent come
across any that havnt worked.

Hi happy_hippy,

Yes, that's been a common error message since SP2 was shipped.

Glad to see your issue is resolved. :)
