Hi,

can you suggest a DOS file manager that would be able to :
- understand long file names
- be able to use NTFS ( if it is technically possible - I think no but am no
expert)
- understand big drives

Have tried DN ( Dos Navigator) but it cannot use big drives ( most folders
aren't displayed at all)

TIA !!!

Yep. ButExtreme is a Windows app not a DOS one, and I am looking for a DOS
based app

Re the NTFS: That is dependant on whether you are actually running any
NT version, as the file manager doesn't read the hardware on its own,
but uses system calls. If the system is up and running, NTFS file
storage is no problem.

Connect(aka "The IBM Handshaker"): http://www.orlov.wapil.com/connect/
does LFN. I think that you will have to work NTFS and large disks another
way.
MSDOS doesn't support disks above 2Gb. There are NTFS solutions around.
There is also
DOS 7.1: http://www.cn-dos.net/msdos71/ -can't be legal, of course.

Hope this helps.

The NTFS reader runs on a bootable cd or floppy and lets you access your
NTFS partitions and copy to FAT drives.

Oh, thanks for remincing me ... can anyone recommend a DOS navigator
or shell manager or whatever it's called?

I was over at my uncle's and he asked me to look at his old Win 3x
Workgroups and I've forgotten how to do searches, etc., across all the
directories (too many switches, etc.).

It would be so neat to have a decent GUI to navigate around the hdd in
DOS. I remember years before in the late 90s looking for a decent one
and none that I found were any good, really.

Thanks.

There are some you can find on the www :

-Norton Commander 5 (i fund it for free)
-You could try GEM (graphical interface, neat and with excellent
repution)

i fund also a midnight commander clone but it works only on windows,

to facilite navigation :

doskey (just type doskey)
acd, (another cd)
wcd
db (dbrowser, works only on IDE drives)

or maybe newcom, an enhanced shell

laurent

this 3 last makes it easier to navigate although there are not GUIs

BTW: Did anybody mention a page with the XTree Gold clones in this
thread?

After following several links, I found this list, where there are at
*some* file managers for free (most aren't):

twice as powerful. DOS/UNIX text mode support.

Genesis Commander

Norton Commander clone. Operating System MS-DOS

MaxDIR
http://www.c-shore.com/maxdir/
This is a DOS DIR command alternative that shows files in 1, 2, 4, or 6
columns and colorizes files by their extension: EXE files are light
cyan, COM files are light green, TXT and DOC files are white, and so
on. It also shows disk percentage used, disk usage, file usage, drive
type, and more. It is designed for anyone who uses the command line in
DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Mac (prompt), or any computer
that has a DOS emulator. It allows for the viewing of hidden/system
files and show dirs separated from files. Version 2.26 is fully
customizable, and you can change all display colors and functions. You
can set up to 25 different configurations using the new included MaxDIR
Config utility.

There is this runtime error bug due to old programs made
with Borland Turbopascal compiler...i couldn't patch it with SAR.
any idea ?

Sure it will, but for the moment i tried to run it in Dosbox, just
for testing, and it works ! not very good, because it couldn't achieve
the scan of my small C drive, i guess it needs more memory as
the default allocation. theorically i could run even unpachtable
programs this way :)
