Dos commands

I know that there are some dos commands that are not
available in XP, however I know I should be able to use
the ipconfig command but even the commands that are
available don't work either...

When I am in dos mode and type ipconfig I get this.

'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program or batch file.

I have Windows XP Professional, file system is NTFS.

Does something need to be changed?

When you say in DOS mode, what are you referring to?

If you use Start - All Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt, which
actually runs the emulated cmd.exe, or do a Start - Run of command.com,
then it ought to find ipconfig.exe in windows\system32
If it does not check a PATH command to ensure that it leads off with

C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\wbem

and check that the file is in windows\system32 - if not run msconfig.exe
and use its expand files button to expand from the CD -
i386\ipconfig.ex_ to windows\system32\ipconfig.exe

If the Path is wrong, go to Control Panel - System - Advanced, click
Environmental variables and edit the path so it starts as above
