Don't know user name in order to network

This is really basic, I know, but we just got a Vista PC and want to network
it with our XP laptops. In order to add one computer to the other (does it
matter which is the primary?) it asks for a User Name and Password. I can't
seem to figure out what my User Name is. Is it the name of the computer,
which the other computer picked up? (OWNER-PC on the Vista machine). Is it
the name that's on the log-in screen? Or something else?

The name that's on the login screen and the password associated with that
name. Or any account username and password that is setup on that box.

I'm so sorry that you haven't recovered from your accident, Chris.
Apparently the horror of going off a cliff has caused you to think you are
an MS-MVP when you aren't.

That didn't work. When I put in "Ed," the name on the log-in screen, and my
password, it changed the username screen to COMPUTERNAME/Ed but didn't
connect, and when I tried it again with COMPUTERNAME/Ed it said "connecting"
but nothing happened. I wonder if it's because the PC is Vista and the laptop
is XP.

On the vista machine in the control panel select Network and Sharing Center.
Verify the sharing preferences located there.
