I'm sorry chuck.. I don't understand.. the one's I have directly above are
ALL 8 of the things you asekd for and they are what they currently are... It
was late last night when I posted that but I have a pretty good idea of why
my browstat changed. BUT I will ask before I change something..

ok. when I reinstalled everything it put me back on a dynamic ip.
Technomancer has stff that requires a static ip address to work effectively,
so I went in to change it. However, it kept teling me that the ip address
that I was trying to assign was already assigned to my ethernet adapter.
Which really didnt make sense because, it wasnt assigned to any computer on
my network. I reset my router around this time because when I made it set my
ip address to that anyway, I could no longer talk to my router. Long story
short, I got all of that fixed and I got all of my settings back to what they
were (at least everything that has been part of the conversation since the
beginning). My idea is that by setting it to that ip address, One of the
times it said that I might not be recognized if the other ethernet adapter
every tried to connect. I didnt care about that at the time because I felt
like there was no way I had to worry about myself connecting while myself was
connected. HAHA. That was probably my error. Granted. It is all points back
to me, so maybe that's why everything is working the way it was?!?

My question is: can I go in and change my static ip address so that it is
not EXACTLY the same as it was before, so that we don't have this potential
conflict. Since, my naivety leads me to believe that that is why Im not
showing up in browstat despite being accessed fine by the other computer.

oh... and when I say brow stat has changed.. I mean if you look at the
browsstats in the post on this page, and then go to post 2 & 3 of page 1 you
can see the differences.

Rev,

All I ask is that you rerun everything at the same time, and present everything
together. You say above
The problem is still the same as before, except that now my browstat log is
different.

That difference may be a key.

Sometimes, we overlook the smallest detail which is essential to the diagnosis.
You do want this fixed? Make sure that we have complete, up to date diagnostic
data, at all times.

And don't go making any changes, like accidentally deleting a driver that you
weren't supposed to.

If you have a static IP address, that could be part of the problem. Start from
default settings, so we know where we are.

C

Chuck

oh... and when I say brow stat has changed.. I mean if you look at the
browsstats in the post on this page, and then go to post 2 & 3 of page 1 you
can see the differences.

OK, I'll ask that you read (and if you have already read either, my apologies)
two more of my articles, to give you an idea how many possibilities there are:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-5-aka-access-denied.html

The "access denied" error is a lot of fun to troubleshoot. Carey (now there is
a name from the past) had a cookbook of treatments, and he would apply each one,
each time a problem was presented. The problem was, Carey didn't diagnose the
problem, he would just apply each treatment. Some treatments weren't necessary,
but he would apply them anyway.

I don't work that way. My goal is to identify the problem, show you how to fix
the problem, and then how to avoid causing the problem again.

So please, read my articles. And remember that I am not there, in front of your
computers with you.

Haha. Yeah. It was an effective method for fixing my problem in 17 minutes
(well if you take into account that that was over the phone after 2 weeks of
nothing over the net). However, it left me sitting here like I am now having
to go back through all of this again because I have no idea how it worked.

Just to be clear, my network was running perfect for what would have been 3
yrs this december. What caused it to fail is that TECHNOMANCER disabled the
guest account, and set a password on the admin account. This killed the
network. Which at the time, was part of my motivation. The other part being
no other users on my pc directly either. The problem was that turning guest
back on and removing the password from the admin account was no sufficient to
restore things back to ye glory days of olde. Which I knew was going to be
the case, when I killed the network, but didnt really care at that time. Ah,
the joy of emotions on rationale. That should have been the only problem,
though now I think I made the whole thing somewhat moot. I mean I did have to
reinstall drivers and everything after reading a bad post about nforce stuff.
I don't think its completely moot however in the sense that this problem is
the problem that I've always had. Its what I have from the initial boot after
a reformat. Its the same problem that Carey had to fix. Though, my stupidity
probably cause NEW problems in addition to the one I have (that are yet
undiscovered), I think the journey itself will be fruitful enough.

now that my digression is done. I switched back to a dynamic ip on
technomancer. After we get everything working I can go back to a static one.
Everything else can just wait. Here are the new logs:

It looks like nothing by the ipconfig has changed. Which is to be expected.
So when I re-installed the drivers, it seems as though Ive added a browser
problem.. Which doesnt seem to be creating any NEW issues, in the sense that
I have to fix other things before I can notice the problem it is making.

Also, sorry for the late reply. I've been doing tech support for some new
hardware Im putting in. My motherboard doesnt want to cooperate with the
added RAM..

G

Guest

ok. I fixed the hardware issues. I needed single sided ram in my 3 and 4
slots in order for my dual channel to work, so I had to swap out ram between
the computers.. because of that things changed. Here's the update..

Chuck

Hope you had a good weekend Chuck.

Bumping this so its easier to find.

Kewl. I knew there was an open thread somewhere in the stack.

Looking at the logs from "browstat status", you now have a normal network. Both
computers see each other ("There are 2 servers in domain IRKEN-NETWORK"), and
both accept the same master browser TECHNOMANCER. Gir is getting an access
denied when trying to access the registry on TECHNOMANCER, normal for Guest
access.

So let's enumerate the current symptoms, methodically.

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).

1. Open Notepad.
2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and
Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad.
3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar
in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable.
4. If the text is not easily read, then:
* Stretch the sides of the window. If this improves things, then
continue with Step 5.
* Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything).
* Open Notepad.
* Under Format, change the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.
* Return to Step 2.

5. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
8. Wait patiently.
9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up and online.

No problem.

I hope you can find something useful in all that. I had a ton of people give
up on it last time. needless to say, my computer is called black death for a
reason. Its incurable. haha. I know that's not technically true. anyway.

I'll keep trying as long as you will.

oh and if it helps I'll go back through the earlier pages on both computers
again. If you don't think of something before I get around to it tomorrow,
I'll post the things that I've checked to make sure I'm doing things right.

Rechecking everything, and posting when you check each thing, is a very useful
way of going back over it. Go to it.

potentially causes the problem.

I know you say that xp pro works requires passwords. This isnt true. When
our network was working we had blank passwords, and it is through setting a
nonblank password that we run into more problems than what we have.

Chuck,
I seem to have found something. I going to go back over both computers and
your site again. Apparently, something I did when checking these things has
triggered me the ability to access some but not all shared folders. I just
tested it before I posted things from technomancer. I'm a bit confused
because some folders appear that are not shared by either computer. I've
tried using F5 to refresh and it doesnt work. Is there a way to get my
network to clear off old folders that are no longer shared by either
computer? GIR only lists currently shared folders while technomancer shows
all folders (currently shared and no longer shared).

What are the folders? Are they shares that used to exist and don't any more?
Or are they shortcuts, that you created manually? If the latter, then you have
to delete them. If the former, then you have to wait. The computer browser
produces a cache, that isn't updated immediately.

If they were put there by the browser, and you want to get rid of them sooner,
you could power both computers off. Power Gir back on (it's the master
browser), and let its desktop come up. Then power Technomancer up. Then rerun
"browstat status" on both computers to verify browser status.
