We have 3 remote sites that started off very small, I configured these sites
so that the workstations authenticated accross the 256k link to the head
office. The users at these sites are starting to increase rapidly and i was
wondering when i should start thinking about installing a remote domain
controller. Thanks in advance!

You can. However, you should also think about the administrative overhead
of managing additional domain controller remotely. Meanwhile, may be you
can first consider a cache-only DNS server at remote location to speed-up
name resolution.

Deploy soon,
Considering the risk associated with login problems deploy a DC to the
remote site then configure as a Global Catalgue Server.
