An imported file has a column that should be displayed as currency. Whether
from the $ sign on the toolbar or via Format|Cells|Number|Currency I cannot
get the $ sign to show.

I've tried copying the column to a worksheet where this works and the
problem remains. I also did a "Repair Application" from Add/Remove Programs
and this made no difference. I also tried Format|Style|Merge from a
worksheet with the correct currency style and this did not work either.

Maybe it's a windows setting (just a guess, though).

Windows start button|control panel
regional and language options
regional options tab
click the customize button
currency tab

What do you see for the currency symbol?

It may be that the numbers are really text.

Have you tried working with them as numbers, like Summing them?

If text, format to General then copy an empty cell.

Select your range of numbers and Paste Special>Add>OK>Esc.
