doesn't recognise Firewire Card IEEE 1394

Hi,
I am new to movie Maker and I am having problems connecting my Panasonic
Mini DV to computer. I can transfer still images using the Panasonic software
Photoovu Link. So I know the computer reconizes the mini DV.

In Mover Maker, it says no capture device available. I know I have the IEEE
1394 card as I can see it in System Config. under hardware.

How can I make the movie maker see the card?
Thanks,
Anne

Papajohn, This seems to be a common problem with the firewire connections
and MM2.1 as well as with the computer recognizing devices using the
firewire. Do you have any advice regarding this? It seems that all those
(including myself) began to experience this after installing SP2.

Very interested,

Bob

Hi Bob,

I haven't noticed any increase in the number of people reporting issues with
firewire capture since SP2, but I don't count posts by topic....

In Anne's post that started this thread, she may be thinking her USB
connection is a firewire one. That wouldn't be unusual, and it wouldn't make
it a firewire issue.

If you point me to a few, I'd be glad to take a look.

Papajohn, thanks for replying. There have been several posts lately, not
only in this forum, but in Afterdawn and others. The ones that have the most
detail in this forum include my posting on 11-11-04 named "mm2.1 error with
Sony Handycam" and the 11-18-04 posting titled "SP2 causes MM2 failure". Any
help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

My problem is that I get a "Class not registered" error when using the Sony
cam and a ADS Pyro device that use firewire. My Logitech webcam using USB
works fine. Also, Windows gives an error "Creation of Video Preview Failed"
even when trying to open the devices in "My Computer". Windows recognizes
that they are there, but when double clicking on them the above error
appears. THis seems to have surfaced after SP2 was installed.

Sorry for the dissertation here, but I really need some help figuring this
one out.

I am not able to capture any Digital Video when all is connected and
installed, I see the DV Cam in the selection but when I go to run the DV cam
via the movie maker program it seems to control the DV CAM (play, forward ,
reverse, pause) but no Video apears in the capture window, I have
uninstalled and reinstalled everything i can think of from my video drivers
to Cam drivers to fire wire drivers, my DV cam works on my laptop top using
moviemaker so i know its not the cam. Short of reinstalling windows again,
not sure what to do.

Hi,

Very new to the video editing side, and I finally got the fact that despite
an internet search etc etc. and mucho confusion realizing that my cable with
my Sony TRV 27 is NOT firewire. Have a firewire card installed, but can
anyone tell me what cables to get 4 or 6pin? I have been capturing video
with the Sony proprietary I-Link cable, and bought 6 pin Firewire cables that
are way too large for my Output connectors.

Any advise to a newb?

Have a Sony TRV-27 and a firewire compatible card.

Finally figured out the ole I-Link is NOT firewire thing.

Which Firewire cables are compatible, 4 pin or 6pin?

Any advice?

Jeff

PS. Sorry for the blank post, hit the wrong button!

Either the 4 or 6 pin connectors will do the job.... but they have to fit
into the camcorder and computer outlets. I have 4 pin to 4 pin cables to
connect camcorders to my laptop, and 4 pin to 6 pin cables to connect the
same camcorders to my desktop computer.

The part that transfers the video/audio is the 4 pins.... don't worry about
the other two.

I-link is sony's version of firewire. It's proper name is ieee1394, although
with the advent of firewire800 which is ieee1394b, you may find the normal
firewire called ieee1394a.
So, your i-link should work. Most if not all camcorders have a 4 pin socket
and most if not all laptops have 4 pin sockets, but pc's have either 4 or 6
pin. As Papajohn says, you need to get the one which is on your machine.
