Vista Home versions support a single processor socket, so dual
processors aren't supported, but a dual core processor is.

Vista Home Premium supports 2 physcial processors with any number of "cores"
per processor.

All versions support any number of "cores" within one physcial processor.
For instance: an Intel Core Duo is one single physcial processor that has
two cores. Windows Home Premium will support two of these processors. Once
Windows Vista Home Premium is running, these two processors, because there
are four cores amongst them, will show up as four CPUs in Task manager and
other utilities.

Windows Vista Home Basic supports only one physical processor, but with any
number of cores on that processor. All the other versions - Home Premium,
Business, Ultimate, support two physcial processors:

P.S. Hold on, I'm checking as there's conflicting information out there.

It supports one physical processor chip but that processor can be dual-core.
I don't know about quad-core but I suspect not.

Home Premium supports 1 socket, Ultimate and Business support 2 sockets
I have dual xeons on an ASUS PC-DL Deluxe and when I installed Premium (
trial ) only showed 1socket but 2 processors, Ultimate shows 2 sockets and
4 processors

One socket. The number of cores in the CPU installed in that socket is
irrelevant.

Home Basic and Home Premium 1 socket, Ultimate and Business 2 sockets, also
Enterprise I think.
Home Premium does support Dual Core
