Does the CPP CD-Key work with Vista

I heard from reliable sources that the CD-Key from the CPP Beta-Vista can be
used to install the retail version of Vista. Is this true, and if not
WHY!?!?!?!?!?!?

No, it is not true. Why is it not true, because the CPP was for pre-release
beta versions of Vista for which you paid nothing. The final retail version
requires that you actually purchase a valid license for it.

Well, this is more of a Vista setup question. I would suggest you post this
message over in
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup, the setup group. There is
a guy over there by the name of CHAD HARRIS that is very good at these sorts
of things. You might want to address him specifically.

What are the "reliable sources"?
You should now consider them unreliable.
There was never any suggestion or expectation that that might be true.
Perhaps in someone's imagination, but not anywhere near reality.

This relates to an ILLEGAL crack of the activation. You need to make
your installation a "Frankenbuild" by using a couple of files from the
beta to do this.

Microsoft know about this, and windows update will try to install a WGA
check if you do this.

Basically, you would have an unlawful installation of vista, which would
be hampered by not having access to many upcoming updates and features.

The frankenbuild thing is really uncool and in the crackers scene it is
"noobs work";

even if he avoids the WGA Update, the Vista would expire in June, the beta
licenses get invalid then, no logon possible - Reinstall from scratch.

The most current problem in pirating is a "timestop" crack that disables the
30day counter for activation and this is working, but can be easily
identified because a unsigned driver is running and the NT logs are full of
warnings of this "driver".

I think this Problem gets solved, soon.

and ( the major real "crack" - delivered from our Chinese Friends, again.. )
:

the latest - manipulating the PCs bios-chip via Extracting the ROM, hexedit
OEM info into it, and flashing it back to the Mainboard; to trick it into
become a OEM Bios and accept OEM Keys ( which need no actiavtion or at least
will always pass WPA and WGA )

I just emailed (e-mail address removed) a list with hundreds of stolen and
misused Vista Keys that these new trick is using.

Of course lots of people have literally grilled their machines to toast with
a bios-flash, but an astonishing amount of folks report they passed thru all
copy-protection and WGA aftrer it was applied.

As this trick is done in Hardware, there is little that Microsoft may do
against this, only to block OEM keys from automatic activation or give OEMs
a list with new methods and new keys.

I always said : bundle Windows with a USB Dongle - or bind the Serial to the
MAC Adress.

USB connections are not mechanically secure enough to meed the needs of many
enterprise systems and certainly not for most server systems. The old
parallel port dongles, which are still being used today, are great because
the connection is mechanically sound.

MAC addresses can change. A network card is nothing more than a plug in
option and can be changed for about 15 dollars. A better key would be the
CPU serial number. The CPU is, afterall, the "Central" processing unit. It
is more the heart of the PC than the motherboard is. But what the heck am I
saying? While I abhore piracy, I dislike the new activation and DRM almost
as much.
