does the Canon MPC 600F need a working print head if you only wantto scan ?

I have a Canon MPC 600F whose print head doe not work any longer, after
4 years of good work (Was it the non-Canon ink that killed it ?) The
Canon people told me that they demand a flat rate of 350 € to open the
lid even ! So, no repairing of Canon products by Canon if Canon decide
that the machine has to be dropped by the client. Compulsory
consumption, so to say.

Today the MPC is still in the hands of Canon. Now I want to know if
someone here can tell me if I can still use the scanner if the print
head does no longer work.

Thanks

It depends on what is wrong with the printhead. If it is only poor quality
output but the printer still prints (although badly) the scanner should work.
If the printer is reporting a failed printhead then it probably won't work.
By the way, you can change the printhead yourself, it is simple and
instructions come with a replacement printhead, try searching for prices.

Replacing is really simple,as you say. I bought the spare part for 80€,
changed the print head but the problem remained. I was then told the
printer had to be reset which only a Canon shop could do (no kidding).
So, I send it in, and Canon now demanded the steep price of 350€ to
reset the printer!

I cannot inderstand the enormous price they are quoting, it is almost obscene.
What I am unsure of is what the reset is, do you think it is to reset the waste
ink counter?
If it is, here is the reset procedure for a different model which I have read
works for the 600F but I have not tried it. No harm can be done so it may be
worth your while.

1) Enter SERVICE MODE by pressing Menu, Copy, Scan, Copy, Copy
2) Select TEST MODE.
3) Select [8] PRINTER TEST in TEST MODE.
4) Select 3. [EEPROM CLEAR].
5) Select 0. [INK COUNT].
6) Press the [Set] key.
7) Press the [Stop/Reset] key (returning to the state of 3)), and then press
the [ON/OFF] key.
Good luck

Thank you Tony! When I have got the printer back I'll try your advice.
Where did you get this info from ?

I cannot guarantee this will work, it depends whether the problem is that the
waste ink counter has reached its limit. If it has this should work. If it does
work it is important to understand that next time the reset is needed the waste
pads must be replaced to avoid ink overflow into the printer.
I cannot remember where I found the information, I am looking for this sort of
thing all of the time.
Good luck

I now got the multifunction printer back, and tried your idea. BTW the
scan works but the printer only prints white pages, with no error messages.

No I tried your idea. Unfortunately, when I push on the menu button the
display shows SPECIAL COPY and this doesn't change when I push Copy,
Scan, Copy, Copy !

When I push Menu - Scan - Copy I get a menu display "DOS PRINTING".

Any idea ?
