DOES ANYBODY KNOW - File copy order

P

Pat Garard

G'Day all,

Amongst other things, my wife got an MP3 player (USB)
for Christmas.

This was a Golden Opportunity for the 'Wise & Ancient One'
to impress with the conversion and copying of MP3s.

Well the 'Wise & Ancient' found the MP3 side of things
straight forward. However, copying to the Player needs
to be done file by file to fix the playing order - even if the
names are given numeric prefixes:
1My Adeline.mp3
2Zulu Warrior.mp3
etc.

Is it possible to control the order in which the files are
copied?

Files are arranged physically on the storage medium in the order in
which they were saved. Your giving them different names will change the
way they're displayed (i.e., the way the OS sorts them) but the physical
arrangement doesn't change.

I'm assuming you're using Windows Explorer to copy the files.

First, make sure Explorer is showing the files in the desired order (sort
by date, or rename the files if you have to).

Next, select all the files (Ctrl-A, shift-click, drag a box, whatever).

Now (this is the vital step): make sure you right click the FIRST file
(the file at the top of your list), then choose copy.

I'm going to repeat that: right click the FIRST file.

If you don't choose the first file, you will screw up the order which the
files are copied.

This where you most likely have failed (you probably right clicked any old
file rather than the first). If you right clicked a different file, focus
rectangle (the rectangle with all those dots) will be shifted, and file
copy will begin from there. So make sure you have the first file selected.

(I choose the bottom file first, Shift-Home to the first file, then I can
Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V the files).

When you select the first file, and paste the files to your mp3 player,
the files will then be copied in the desired order.

You can drag & drop the files to your Mp3 player, but make sure you are
dragging from the FIRST file. Don't drag from the middle, or the bottom.
