Documents won't print in Word with Vista

I have Vista Home, MS Office Professional 2003 and Epson D78

All worked fine until about 10 days ago. But now documents will not print in
Word. I get a message saying the printer has not responded and that the
Microsoft Office porgaram may be able to proceed with the printer
information, but it usually can't and it is impossible to print.

I can still print in Outlook, Excel etc. without problem.

I have already re-installed Word, the Vista driver for the D78 and going
back to a restore point before the problems started but none of this helps.

Can anyone help me. I am going INSANE!

Yes, I have the right driver. Everything worked fine at the start.

The printer still works, even in other Office products (Excel and Outlook)
but every time I open a Word document it cannot find the printer and says
there is none installed. It asks me whether I want to continue even though
the printer has not responded. If I can on the printer icon in the toolbar,
it says not printer, and on the rare occasions I get as far as the print
Window in Word, the printer does not come up in the box as the default
printer, even though it is correctly installed and shows up as default
printer everyhwere else. I also cannot select it as the default printer as
Word goes into Cyberspace.

Try this:
In the printer folder select a different printer as default. If you have no
other printer, use one of the generic drivers in the Install New Printer wizard.

When you are ready to print from Word select your regular printer. Does it work
now?

Not really! The Word document opens faster if I select the Document Writer as
default printer. I get the Epson in the dropdown list of printers afterwards,
but Word then goes into Cyberspace when I try to set it as default printer.

One page has actually been printed as I write this. But the time from Word
print screen to the printer is long enough to go and make a cup of tea.
Surely, this cannot be normal.

I used to be able to print without problem and at the speed of light with
the same printer, the same Office Professional and Windows XP.

If I had known that Vista was going to make the slightest thing so difficult
i.e. printing a Word document, I would have stuck with XP.

I truly appreciate your help. I have been able to print one page, but the
issue is definitely not solved by any means.

Yes, I have read the support documetns on the Epson web site.

I have also been in contact with the Epons support service for days, but
they say it is not an Epson problem, but Vista or Office.

I tend to agree as my printer is working perfectly in any programme other
that Word (including Outlook, Excel in the same Office suite).

It also worked perfectly with Word at the start, so that I can only imagine
that something in one of the automatic updates in the past 2 weeks has thrown
it, as I have "only" been experiencing the print problem with Word for the
past 10 days or so.

All very frustrating.
