Documents Locked

Hey guys, thanks in advance for any help you guys can give. I use Word
on a daily basis, and write short stories. I used a version of
Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003, and I am not unable to edit/add
or open new documents in Word documents. When I try to type in the lower
left hand corner it says "This modification is not allowed because the
document is locked"

I tried right clicking on the icon on the desktop, going to properties,
then went under the general tab and looked to see if the Read-Only tab
was checked, but it wasn't.

Any additional trouble shooting techniques would be really helpful.

Did you activate Word (Office)? Could it be an expired trial version?
