Document Recovery after reinstall

I've re-installed XP home edition as an effort to speed up my computer
without resorting to a full format. As a result I now can't access any of the
personal files contained in the 'my documents' folder. Foolish for not
backing up, I know. I have the old admin password but windows is refusing me
access to the files. I know they're all there as the file transfer wizard
will let me explore the folder, just not access anything. Is there anything I
can do by way of file recovery?

You just need to take ownership of the files.
